Sanctification and Cooperation: How Prayer Helps Strengthen Relationships in Good Times and Heal Relationships in Bad Times
We can look at many things in our life as "sacred". The text (Successful Marriages and Families) talks about looking at a job as a "calling". When we look at it this way, we are more apt to take it seriously and it was reported that workers missed fewer days. In a similar study it was reported that those who viewed their bodies as sacred placed a higher priority on daily physical exercise. So along the same lines we can look at sanctification of marriage. This would consist of looking at a civil thing such as marriage as a more spiritual event. If all marriages were looked at as sacred, I imagine infidelity would be much lower and happiness within marriage would be much higher.
One way we can help our marriages to be more spiritual and sacred is by introducing a relationship with our Heavenly Father through family prayer. There will always be disagreements, even in a perfect marriage, but prayer will help to heal our relationships and ultimately protect us from divorce. In a study conducted by Gruner, 81 percent of happy couples reported praying frequently as a means of addressing marital problems. If we seek to improve our relationship with our Heavenly Father together, harmony and happiness will abound in the home.
